My ex-husband drank. It was not a cultural or social thing in my family — or his. I began going to Al-anon meetings and joined a support group of spouses of alcoholics led by experts in setting up interventions. The word I heard most often was “disease,” although because it’s self-inflicted, that was hard to accept. Catherine, do you see drinking to the point that it negatively affects families and children a social ill, a weakness, a disease — or due to a combination of factors?
